Dr. Heather Hulburt Norris has been named chancellor of Appalachian State University, effective March 1, 2025. She has served as interim chancellor since April 2024 and has more than 20 years of academic leadership at App State. Norris began her career at the university in 2003, holding various leadership roles, including dean of the Walker College of Business. As provost, she oversaw academic affairs, led the development of the university’s 2022-2027 strategic plan, and played a key role in the university’s response to Hurricane Helene in 2024.

Under her leadership, the university saw significant growth, including a 23.5% increase in online student enrollment and a 41% increase in Hickory campus enrollment. Norris has also led efforts to expand educational access, launching new degree programs and increasing partnerships for nontraditional learners. App State recently earned a Research 2 designation for high research activity and doctorate production, and Norris has overseen a substantial increase in research funding.

Norris has been committed to enhancing faculty and staff welfare, implementing salary increases, and launching initiatives to improve student success. She has also focused on fostering a civically engaged university community and is working on a six-year capital plan for university facilities. Norris holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University and advanced degrees in finance from Penn State University.
